Last week we had the honor to launch Alves de Sousa’s flagship wine Quinta da Gaivosa for the second time in the exclusive assortment at Systembolaget. The wine is temporary available in a limited quantity and is of vintage 2011.
The estate Quinta da Gaivosa, where the wine is made, was bought by the Alves de Sousa family in the 1980’s. Beyond that, they own an additional five estates, which makes them to one of the biggest independent producers in Douro. Today the estates are run by the fourth generation in the Sousa family, working with viticulture, namely Tiago de Sousa, who is also the winemaker of their wines.
The wine is made of grapes grown on almost 100 years old vines in rough soil and slopes surrounded by wild forests and the Marão Mountains. The vintage 2011 resulted in vibrant fresh fruit, but with great depth, aromatic complexity and solid structure, giving serious indications of an exceptional quality and great aging ability.
If you have the chance to buy a bottle we strongly recommend this unique wine. Earlier vintages have received up to 94 points by Robert Parker. The wine is complex in an elegant style with notes of raspberries, eucalyptus leaves and dried dark plums. It has many good years to come and represents Portugal from its very best side.
Under the following link you can see which stores still have the wine available: https://www.systembolaget.se/dryck/roda-viner/quinta-da-gaivosa-9250501
