Spencer Trappist Ale is the only Trappist Ale brewed in the US and is now available at certain Systembolaget stores.  The beer is brewed at the Saint Josephs’s Abbey, a Trappist community that observes the counsel of the Rule of St. Benedict, a 6th century guide for monastic life, that stresses the importance of ora et labora or “pray and work.” Monks are encouraged to be self-supportive and offer charitable assistance to others by producing and selling goods to the public. This is how the idea of an own brewery started, when one of the brothers interested in brewing, was inspired to follow European Trappist breweries and brew an own Trappist beer.

A Trappist beer is not a type of beer, but rather a designation, guaranteeing the product fulfills requirements of the International Trappist Association (ITA). Spencer Trappist Ale is a full-bodied, golden-hued ale with accents of dried and bitter oranges, spices, cardamom, a dry finish and light hop bitterness. The beer is unfiltered and unpasteurized, preserving live yeast that naturally carbonates the beer in the bottle and contributes to the beer flavor and aroma.
